Biography of Norma Lasher

norma-lasherNORMA HAS BEEN PAINTING LANDSCAPES IN OILS FOR MORE THAN FORTY YEARS AS A WAY TO SEEK OUT THE BEAUTY OF HER SURROUNDINGS IN HER MANY MOVES.  SHE HAS BEEN FORTUNATE TO DO MUCH TRAVELING AND HER PAINTINGS REFLECT THE MEMORIES OF HER VARIOUS TRIPS.  IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS, NORMA HAS DISCOVERED THE UNIQUE CHALLENGES AND REFRESHING PROPERTIES OF TRANSPARENT WATERCOLOR.   SHE ENJOYS THE DISCIPLINE, SO DIFFERENT FROM OIL PAINTING, OF KEEPING THE WHITE OF THE PAPER WITH CAREFUL PLANNING.   NORMA FEELS THAT EACH MEDIUM HELPS THE OTHERS.

IN MARCH 2008, NORMA WON THE BOARD OF DIRECTOR’S AWARD, BEST OF SHOW FOR A WATERCOLOR IN THE ART LEAGUE’S MEMBERSHIP SHOW JURIED BY JACK  BOUL IN WHICH 532 WORKS WERE ENTERED AND 95 SELECTED.  IN MARCH 2009, SHE TOOK FIRST PLACE FOR AN OIL PAINTING IN RICHMOND’S GENERAL ASSEMBLY ART SHOW OF RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES (VANHA) JURIED BY MEMBERS OF THE VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS.    IN JANUARY 2010, NORMA WON BEST OF SHOW IN THE LEAGUE OF RESTON ARTISTS SHOW,” BIG AND SMALL” FOR A MINIATURE OIL PAINTING.

AFTER LIVING FOR SEVEN YEARS IN THE MOUNTAINS OF COLORADO,  NORMA MOVED TO A RETIREMENT COMMUNITY IN STERLING, VIRGINIA CALLED FALCONS LANDING.   THIS COMMUNITY HAS BEEN ABLE TO USE HER TALENTS IN MANY WAYS AND ALSO HAS BEEN HELPFUL BY DISPLAYING HER LARGEST WORKS IN ALL OF THE BUSINESS OFFICES IN THE MAIN BUILDING.  NORMA TEACHES BOTH OIL AND WATERCOLOR PAINTING AND PARTICIPATES IN A GROUP THAT DOES WEEKLY PORTRAITURE OF  “SITTING” RESIDENTS.   SHE AND HER HUSBAND OF 59 YEARS CHANGE ARTWORK OF RESIDENTS IN THREE GALLERIES EVERY MONTH.   SHE ACTIVELY  FINDS SUITABLE ARTWORK FOR THE MANY APARTMENT HALLWAYS AND HEALTH CENTER.

NORMA’S ART LESSONS BEGAN IN 1961 IN JAPAN  COPYING THE MASTERS’ WORKS; THEN TO PLEIN AIRE LANDSCAPES AND PORTRAITURE OF OTHERS IN THE CLASS.  THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY NUMEROUS WORKSHOP TEACHERS UNTIL 1979 , WHEN SHE MOVED TO VIRGINIA AND JOINED THE ART LEAGUE IN THE TORPEDO FACTORY, ALEXANDRIA, VA.   SHE BECAME A GALLERY DIRECTOR THERE FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.  UPON HER RETIREMENT FROM THAT JOB, SHE HAD HER FIRST ONE-ARTIST SHOW THERE.   SINCE THEN THERE HAVE BEEN MANY GALLERIES,  MANY  ART WORKSHOPS,  MANY ONE-ARTIST SHOWS IN THE VARIOUS LOCATIONS WHERE SHE HAS LIVED.
